AHMEDABAD, Nov 10 (Reuters) - South Africa saw off a spirited fightback from Afghanistan to win by five wickets in their final World Cup group game and consolidate second place in the standings. South Africa have 14 points from their nine games, two points ahead of Australia who play Bangladesh on Saturday. Both South Africa and Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals. Afghanistan wrapped up their best ever World Cup campaign with four wins and also sealed a place in the Champions Trophy. In response, South Africa opener Quinton de Kock set up the chase with a breezy 41 that took him to the top of the tournament's scoring charts on 591 runs.

South Africa have genuine match-winners in their ranks, players who can light up the big stage, but whether they have a team from one-to-11 that can perform consistently in Indian conditions is the big question. South Africa’s shock exit at last year’s Twenty20 World Cup following a loss to the Netherlands with much the same group of players still weighs heavy on captain Temba Bavuma. "We’ve been challenging each other to make sure that awareness is there and we’re not taking things for granted," he told reporters. On the face of it, South Africa do have a team capable of success, as they showed in a recent 3-2 home series win over Australia in which they rallied from 2-0 down. But if South Africa can get on a run and find collective form they could prove hard to stop.

☆ Australia adds Neser to bolster pace attack in South Africa

BLOEMFONTEIN, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Fast bowler Michael Neser will return to the country of his birth to shore up Australia's pace attack in the one day international series in South Africa after more injuries hit the team. Left hand quick Spencer Johnson, who was added to the ODI squad, has now sustained a hamstring injury, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Saturday. Johnson will remain in South Africa and travel with rest of the white-ball squad to India later this month, added the CA statement. South Africa on Saturday added all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo to their squad as cover for Sisanda Magala, who is recovering from an acute knee injury. Magala has made positive progress in his recovery and will continue his build-up towards contention for selection during this series, said a statement from Cricket South Africa.
